Systems Engineering for Software Intensive Systems is structured as a series of certificate courses that are designed to meet industry's critical needs. Each critical skill is addressed by a single course, awarding a certificate upon successful completion. The completion of both the EA Fundamentals and Advanced EA courses offer an additional certificate (Certified Enterprise Architect). The series, as a whole, offers a Program Certificate.
Each Certificate Course
Each e-Learning certificate course employs a blend of guided learning activities, including readings, between 10 and 16 video lectures, weekly individual task assignments, and course-long teamwork. All assignments are graded to ensure mastery of the course objectives. All courses are graded on a "pass/fail" basis. An electronic bulletin board is available for questions and threaded discussions with instructors, mentors, and other students. A bi-weekly teleconference will also be scheduled to promote direct class discussion with instructor and mentors. Students must complete all weekly assignments and team work to receive the passing grade. As a general rule, successful performance in a course will require each student to spend 10 to 15 hours per week.
Lecture Delivery
Students will view course lectures via the internet each week. The link for each lecture will be available for two weeks, beginning each Sunday, 4am Pacific time, through access to the course website using a designated username/password. Lecture slides in PDF format are available to help students capture the main points of the lecture.
Hardware Requirements for Lecture Viewing
- PC running Microsoft Windows
- Internet Explorer - Version 6 or higher
- Windows Media Player - Version 10 or higher
- Network connection - at least 256 kb/s (kilobits per second)
Although our lectures were designed to be viewable on the Macintosh, we were disappointed to learn that Microsoft has carried through it's plan to discontinue support for Internet Explorer for the Macintosh. Until we find an alternative solution, you will need a Windows PC to view the eLearning courses. To help us plan for the future, please let us know if this is a problem.
Certificates from Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon awards a Course Certificate for satisfactory completion of each certificate course, an additional certificate for completion of both EA Fundamentals and Advanced EA, and a Program Certificate (Systems Engineer) to those who complete five required courses and two of the elective courses. The certificates will be mailed to students at the end of each academic year for all courses during that period (September thru August).
